Quilter Profile - Shari Guymon

1.    I made my first quilt in 1969 when I had my first child.  It was a mothergoose quilt with painted blocks.

2.     I have made approximately a dozen quilts at most…..I usually choose small projects that I feel I can be sure to finish.

3. What pattern or type of quilt do you enjoy making?  I have enjoy piecing, and creating my own patterns, using graph paper.  I like to try new techniques.

4. Is there something distinctive about your quilting style? ………Experimenting …Most are fairly simple patterns, playing with style and color…..I made one for one of my daughters once with a giant checkerboard in the middle and gave her giant checkers to play with.

5. What is your earliest quilting memory? ……..My earliest memory is of theMother Goose quilt which had hand painted blocks and was hand quilted as well…..Ialso remember helping some friends do tricot quilts, and sometimes losing myneedle underneath the quilt…..The most vivid memory is the jean quilt I tiedwhere I had to use pliers to pull the needle with yarn through the very heavyfabrics.

6. I have been a member of the Grayson Country Quilt Guild since _____.  Not sure…I think it’s been about 3 years…..

7. I was taught to quilt by ______________. No one specifically taught me, Ijust observed others and was taught bits and pieces when I helped with projects.I’ve learned a lot since I’ve been in the guild, and I also use books and theinternet for clarification on techniques.

8. Who do you usually make quilts for? …I usually make items for familymembers.

9. My favorite quilt I ever made was…..An Amish quilt that I made for a weddinggift.  A lot of others helped me with thequilting part.  I loved the colors, thefriendship and the bright and cheery nature of the quilt…It was quite striking!

1.  How long have you been quilting?  About 10 years, unsuccessfully.

2.  Approximately how many quilts have you made?  1/2 of many, one to completion - a sampler quilt in a college class.

3. What pattern or type of quilt do you enjoy making?  I like anything easy if I am making it or I like intricate ones if I'm appreciating someone else's work.

4. Is there something distinctive about your quilting style?     I like geometric patterns.


5. What is your earliest quilting memory?  I made a pillowcase in 4th grade home economics.

1. I have been quilting for 15 years.

3. What pattern or type of quilt do you enjoy making?    Scrap quilts, Turning 20, and a challenge from time to time.

5. What is your earliest quilting memory?  My maternal grandmother hand quilted.  She thought it was ridiculous to cut yardage and sew it together again so all her quilts were fabric.

7. I was taught to quilt by Gayle Shumway and quilt classes at Parley Redd's.

8. Who do you usually make quilts for?   My family.

9. My favorite quilt I ever made was our Grayson Country Quilters Petriglyph Quilt and the second one, is one I made for my sone with panels and quilt elements.  It was in last summer's Quilt Show.

1. I have been quilting for approximately 40 years.

3. What pattern or type of quilt do you enjoy making?  Applique, baby quilts.

4. Is there something distinctive about your quilting style?     Definitely not.  I do hand quilt all my quilts.


5. What is your earliest quilting memory?  When I was four years old, sitting underneath the quilt at Relief Society when my mom was quilting.

9. My favorite quilt I ever made was 'Moose".  It had lots of dimention to it.

1.  How long have you been quilting?  I don't quilt I tye!

5. What is your earliest quilting memory?   Helping my Grandma Guymon by cutting the strings after she tied the long row of knots.

6. I have been a member of the Grayson Country Quilt Guild since...  It has been so long ago, I can't remember.

7. I was taught to quilt by my sister Bonnie Meyer.

8. Who do you usually make quilts for? My grandkids, nieces and nephews and we sell alot!

9. My favorite quilt I ever made was a denim quilt for a niece with a lot of BLING on it.  Quilt was made and bound and delivered to her mom and dad to take to her for Christmas.  They decided they didn't like all the bling and we had to glue pockets on over the bling.

1. I started quilting for about 13 years.  I helped Gail with some hand quilting and tieing quilts before.

2. I have made approximately eight or ninequilts.

3. What pattern or type of quilt do you enjoy making?  Medallions and stars, wedge works.

4. Is there something distinctive about your quilting style?     I am a man and I look forward to retirement and more time to quilt.

5. What is your earliest quilting memory?   Trying to understand sewing instructions on the first quilt I made.

1. I started quilting in 2006 for one month.  Then in January of 2010 I finished a quilt I started years before.

2. I have made approximately 20 quilts.

3. What pattern or type of quilt do you enjoy making?  I don't have a favorite yet.

4. Is there something distinctive about your quilting style? I haven't made the same quilt twice yet and like to learn something from each one and challenge myself since I'm new to quilting.
5. What is your earliest quilting memory? I like this more than making Navajo outfits.  My mom sews and was teaching us girls.

Quilter Profile - Rosalie Payne

1.  I have been quilting for 14 years.

2.  I have made approximately 125+ quilts. 

3.  What pattern or type of quilt do you enjoy making? Right now I'm using fabrics from my stash.  I've always loved scrap quilts or anything that looks like my grandmother might have made it.

4.  Is there something distinctive about your quilting style?   Probably not

5.  What is your earliest quilting memory?    Helping my grandmother with a quilt for a cousin's wedding.  I was about five years old and had a great time "quilting" on a bit in the corner.   Even though my efforts ended up looking like a crazy spider web, Grandma wouldn't allow anyone to unpick my stiches.  She told everyone that they were done with love. 

6.  I was a member of the Grayson Country Quilt Guild from 1997 to 2007.

7.  My first quilting class was taught by Becky Reissner (Log Cabin Quilt class taught in the basement of Redd's True Value in the summer of 1997).  I've also learned from some of Blanding's finest quilters -- Bonnie Meyer, EveLynn Perkins, Norma Madden, Lynnette Adams, Janet Wilcox, Kathy Hurst and Josephine Bayles to name just few. 
8.  Who do you usually make quilts for?   My nieces and nephews

9.  My favorite quilt I ever made is probably the one that I am working on at the time.  A couple that rank in the top would be my postage stamp quilt and one with 110 hand embroidered blocks called "Favorite People, Places and Things.                                                                                                                                 

Quilter Profile - Eve Lynn Perkins

1.  I have been quilting for about 75 years.

2.  I have made approximately - wish I knew - quilts.

3.  What pattern or type of quilt do you enjoy making?  Stars are my favorite.

4.  Is there something distinctive about your quilting style?   I like to applique something on each quilt I make.

5.  What is your earliest quilting memory?   When I was ten years old I made my tobbaco quilt, from my dad's bull durham sacks. I collected them and made a quilt out of them.  I have still have it.

6.  I have been a member of the Grayson Country Quilt Guild since 1995.  I was a charter member.

7.  I was taught to quilt by my mother.
8.  Who do you usually make quilts for?   Grandkids and kids and new babies in the neighborhood

9.  My favorite quilt I ever made was a basket quilt, I saw a picture and fell in love with the quilt.  It took me three years to find the right fabric and three more years to get it made.

Quilter Profile - Kathy Hurst

1.  How long have you been quilting?  I really started quilting in about 1990 when I borrowed a book from my mother-in-law Carol Hurst.  It was entitled “Quilting for People With No Time to Quilt.”

2.  Approximately how many quilts have you made?  I don’t know for sure, but I think it’s approaching 200.

3.  What pattern or type of quilt do you enjoy making?  My favorite quilts are scrap quilts.  I like the scrappy look much better than lots of the same fabric.

4.  Is there something distinctive about your quilting style?  I don’t think so.  You probably wouldn’t be able to pick mine out of a line-up.  They just look like quilts.

5.  What is your earliest quilting memory?  My mother never quilted, but my Grandma Peay did.  She used to buy fabric scraps from the old Barbizon factory in Provo and make quilts for the new babies in the family.  I still have the one she made for Kim when she was born.

6.  I’ve been a guild member since the very beginning.  EveLynn Perkins and I decided we needed a quilt guild in Blanding.  We advertised in the paper and had the organizational meeting in my living room.

7.  I was taught to quilt at first by books, but most of the inspiration and really good ideas have come from the ladies in the quilt guild.  When we first started, my goal was to make every quilt we learned about (which was about once a month).  It didn’t take long for me to realize that was a little ambitious, but I think I’ve at least tried almost everything we’ve been taught.

8.  Who do you usually make quilts for?  Usually my family, but I really like the idea of making quilts for people who need them too.

9.  My favorite quilt I ever made was “That Damn Norma Quilt.”  It was the most challenging I ever tried, and it even included some appliqué, which is not my forte.

Quilter Profile - Sidney Christensen

1.  I have been quilting since 1996.

2.  I have made approximately 30 quilts.

3.  What pattern or type of quilt do you enjoy making?   I love quilts that contain flying geese in them.
4.  Is there something distinctive about your quilting style?  Over all, I like 'easy' patterns that don't take a lot of time.

5.  What is your earliest quilting memory?    When I was six or seven, I was at Relief Society Workday and I wanted to hand quilt a quilt.  I did a few stitches and the lady who was over it got mad at me because the stitches were not showing up on the bottom.  She made me quit!  (I guess this is why I don't like to handquilt!?!)

6.  I have been a member of the Grayson Country Quilt Guild since 2010.

7.  I was taught to quilt by a friend, Sheri Haderlie.

8.  Who do you usually make quilts for?   Family and friends and ME.

9.  My favorite quilt I ever made was for my husband Mike.  He had just published his first novel - Tomb of the Devils - and I made a quilt of his book cover.   Now days, I'm not really sure it looks like his book cover.  This was one of my first quilts and now, I'd do it much differently!

Quilter Profile - Vicky Kuykendall

1.  I have been quilting since 1983.  I helped quilt my wedding tricot quilt.  Prior to this, I helped tie quilts in Young Women.

2.  I have made one quilt and 2-3 quilt tops.

3.  What pattern or type of quilt do you enjoy making?  I'm a Log Cabin Babe

4.  Is there something distinctive about your quilting style?  I dislike cutting of triangles so I fold them so it's layered.

5.  What is your earliest quilting memory?  Playing under quilts my mom and Grandma(Wanda Hurst Palmer Laws) were quilting.

7.  I was taught to quilt by my mother, Sandra Laws Jackson.  I am more a piecer than a quilter.
